Sport & Adventure Activities
For those with a taste for adventure Samui now has far more to offer than
just beaches and every year someone comes up with another idea to keep you
thrilled and busy. Below is a selection of what’s currently on offer for the
more active visitor. To get a birds eye view of the jungle, book on a Canopy
Tour, which allows you to travel between tree houses in a harness attached to a
high tensile cable suspended high above the forest floor. An instructor shows
you how it’s done, and guides accompany you on the 300-metre ride through
nature. The views are spectacular and there’s even a bar by a waterfall at the
end of the run to cool off in. Tel. 077 414 150 for a free pick up, or drop into
their office on the beach in Chaweng (Chaweng Map).
Blue
Star Kayaking offers one and two day trips to the Angthong Marine Park (see
Beyond Samui section) where it’s still possible to discover magical caves and
bizarre rock formations as well as dozens of deserted beaches. Paddling is a
great way to explore the caves and inlets, and those that keep their eyes and
ears open may even spot some of the dolphins and monkeys that make this
spectacular park their home. Tel. 077 413 231 for more information.
Mountain bike enthusiasts should contact Red Bicycle, which offers a range of
half and full day off-road trips for experienced riders into Samui’s mountainous
interior, both in the South and north east of the island, as well as sightseeing
bike tours to various temples and natural attractions and a special trek over to
Koh Tan the unspoilt tropical; island off Samui’s southern coast. All the trips
include lunch and full equipment, which is kept in perfect condition. For those
wanting to go it alone, the shops in Lamai and Big Buddha also have top-notch
Cannondale, Santa Cruz and Jamis bikes for rent. Tel. 077 232 136 or 077 245 936
If
you prefer water-based action, Kiteboarding is one of the world’s fastest
growing sports and combines windsurfing with stunt kite flying for some serious
speed and excitement. During the windier months Kiteboarding Asia offer expert
instruction on Koh Samui and also sell the very latest equipment all year round
at extremely competitive prices. Newcomers and experts alike can visit their
outlets at the Samui Orchid Resort in the south (Dec – March) and One Hundred
Degrees East at Shambala Bungalows in the north (Sep - Nov). For instruction and
information call Bret Murrell on 01 591 4594 or One Hundred Degrees East on 077
245 936
Also on the water, why not rent your own boat for
the day and explore some of Samui’s spectacular coastline. Hammerhead Marine
rent four to six person inflatable boats with 15 or 25 HP motors attached to
cruise around the bays. Trips include a briefing on safety and orientation, life
jackets, GPS, mobile phone and tips on what to see and do. Thrill seekers can
also opt for a hair-raising trip in a tunnel hull inflatable ‘Thundercat’ that
can reach speeds of up to 60 MPH on the water and will leave you exhausted,
aching, but exhilarated. Based at Shambala Bungalows on Big Buddha Beach (North
Coast map). Call Lee on 090096961. |
